Faq MEMENTO

Welcome to the MEMENTO Frequently Asked Questions.
Here you will find answers to common questions regarding technical specifications,

connectivity, routing, and workflow.

Connections and operation

1. Which input mode should I use?

In SOUND → INPUT → SOURCE, choose STEREO for a stereo source, MONO L or MONO R for a source connected to one input, or DUAL MONO for two instruments you want to route separately. In MONO L and MONO R, the selected input feeds both sides.

2. Can I connect two instruments and process them differently?

Yes. In DUAL MONO, the routing matrix shows separate in L and in R rows. For each input, you can choose whether to send it to OUT, delay, texture, and reverb. The OVL REC column lets you choose which input to record into the overlay.

3. What is the difference between a FLOW and a preset?

A FLOW defines the sound’s structure: the texture engine, connections, processing order, and associated settings. A preset stores a broader set of settings and includes a copy of the active FLOW.

4. How do I compare the processed sound with the input signal?

Hold BACK/SHIFT and press MASTER to activate bypass. Repeat the gesture to return to the processed sound. Input gain still applies; if master mute is active, the output stays muted in bypass too.

Routing and levels

1. How do I change the connections between sections?

Open SOUND → ROUTING. Turn X or MENU to select a cell, then press X or MENU to enable or disable the connection. Rows are sources and columns are destinations. Changes apply to the active FLOW.

2. What is the difference between the LEVELS knobs and the OUT level?

The DRY, OVERLAY, DELAY, and TEXTURE knobs adjust each source’s level before routing, affecting the signal sent to its destinations. The OUT level adjusts only the direct output, without changing how much of the source feeds delay, texture, and reverb.

3. How do I adjust the OUT level?

In the matrix, select the source’s OUT cell and turn Y. You can also hold the source’s knob and turn MENU. Adjustments use 5% steps, or 1% steps while also holding BACK/SHIFT. Adjusting a disabled OUT cell enables it again. In DUAL MONO, the DRY shortcut adjusts in L; use the matrix for in R.

4. Can I send a source to effects without hearing it directly?

Yes. Disable its OUT cell and leave the connections to the desired effects enabled. For example, you can send a source only to reverb. Muting the source works differently: it also stops the signal feeding its other destinations.

5. What does n/a mean in the matrix?

The connection is unavailable with the current order of delay and texture. If delay comes first, texture cannot feed it; with the opposite order, delay cannot feed texture. You can change the order using order on the same screen.

6. How do I mute a section or the entire output?

Hold OFF and press DRY, OVERLAY, DELAY, or TEXTURE to mute that section. To mute the entire output, hold OFF and press MASTER. Repeat the same gesture to unmute.

Overlay and texture

1. What is the difference between ADD and CHANGE?

ADD records a new layer on top of the existing overlay. CHANGE replaces the material in the part of the loop that passes during recording. In both cases, hold the button to record and release it to stop.

2. Does holding the recording button determine the overlay’s loop length?

No. The loop length depends on OVL SIZE and the tempo. How long you hold the button determines only how much you record within that loop. Recording starts at the current playhead position; it does not restart the loop from the beginning.

3. Can I undo a recording or recover a cleared overlay?

Hold BACK/SHIFT and press ADD to undo the last recording (UNDO). Repeat the gesture to empty the overlay (CLEAR). Use BACK/SHIFT + CHANGE for REDO, including after a CLEAR. There is one undo level: recording new material after UNDO or CLEAR makes the previous state unavailable.

4. Why does the overlay change pitch when I change the tempo?

With OVL TYPE = TAPE, the recorded material changes speed and pitch to fit the new loop length. With JUMP, pitch stays unchanged: the loop is shortened or extended with silence. OVL TYPE is in the texture settings.

5. What does MENTAL BLOCK freeze?

It freezes the texture memory. The active engine keeps reading that memory, but no new material is written into it. The lit LED and padlock indicate that the memory is frozen. An overlay recorded in this state can be heard at the output, but it does not enter the frozen memory.

Controls and synchronization

1. Why does a knob not respond after I load a preset?

If SETTINGS → CATCH is enabled, you must move the knob to the stored value before it takes control. An asterisk beside the value indicates that the physical knob has not reached it yet. MASTER always responds directly.

2. Why is the delay not following the BPM?

Check whether it is in milliseconds mode: in that mode, delay time is absolute and does not follow the BPM. Press MILLISECONDS to return to musical divisions. If you use an external clock, also check the selected source in SYNC and make sure the clock is arriving.

3. Why can’t I change the BPM with MENU?

When MEMENTO receives clock from the selected external source, that source controls the tempo. A padlock beside the source indicates this state. To adjust the tempo manually again, select MANUAL in SYNC.

4. Why is the Touch Surface doing something other than its assigned functions?

With TOUCH → MODE = CONTEXT, some screens use the strip for a dedicated function, such as moving playback heads or navigating a menu. Leave the screen to return to your assignments, or choose LOCKED to keep them active.

5. How do I assign a modulator to a control?

Hold RATE 1 or RATE 2 and press the knob of a compatible parameter you want to modulate. Repeat the gesture to remove the assignment. One modulator can control multiple destinations; some engine parameters are assigned through their own MOD menu entries instead.

Saving and WebEditor

1. If I edit a FLOW, do presets using it change too?

No. Each preset stores its own copy of the FLOW. Editing the FLOW in the library does not update existing presets. To keep a new result in a preset, save that preset again.

2. How do I save changes to a FLOW?

Open the FLOWS library, select the FLOW, and press Y to enter editing. Use SAVE to store it in the library. Unsaved changes are lost when you power off.

3. What does PANEL do in the preset screen?

It returns the parameters controlled by the knobs to their physical panel values without loading a preset. Use it to resume control from the knob positions you can see.

4. Does WebEditor process MEMENTO’s audio?

No. WebEditor exchanges configurations with the unit; MEMENTO continues to process the audio. With LIVE enabled, changes sync in both directions. With LIVE disabled, you can prepare changes and transfer them later using SEND.

Troubleshooting

1. I can’t hear anything. What should I check first?

Check MASTER, source levels, and any active mutes. Then check the input mode and connections to OUT in SOUND → ROUTING. If you just loaded a preset, check CATCH. Finally, try disabling the noise gate using GATE in its editor: a threshold set too high can block the signal.

2. I can’t hear the texture. Where should I start?

Check the TEXTURE level, its mute, and its OUT cell in the matrix. Then make sure at least one source feeds the TEXTURE column: without material in memory, the engine has nothing to read. Disable MENTAL BLOCK if you want to capture new material.

3. How do I find where the signal is clipping?

Open SOUND → LEVELS to see levels at different points in the chain and identify where too much signal is building up. If the direct sound already distorts, check input gain and the sensitivity switch on the rear panel. Keep in mind that some effects produce distortion intentionally.

4. Can the noise gate remove noise while I play?

The gate mainly works during pauses: it attenuates the signal when it falls below the threshold. It does not remove noise accompanying the sound while the gate is open. If you hear a click when it opens, increase ATT and keep THRS as low as possible while still reducing unwanted noise.
